The lifespan of sea fish varies enormously, from just a year or two for small schooling fish to well over a century for some deep-water giants. Knowing how long a species lives helps explain why some fish are more vulnerable to overfishing than others.
Short-Lived Sea Fish
Small fish that grow and breed quickly usually have short lives. Anchovies live around three to four years, sardines about five to ten years, and herring up to fifteen years. Mackerel typically live between fifteen and twenty years. Because they reproduce rapidly, these species can recover faster when fishing pressure is managed well.
Medium-Lived Sea Fish
Many popular food fish fall in the middle range. Atlantic salmon often live five to eight years, sea bass up to twenty-five years, and cod around twenty-five years. Snapper and grouper commonly reach twenty to forty years, depending on the species and environment.

Long-Lived Sea Fish
Some species grow slowly and mature late in life. Halibut can live over fifty years, bluefin tuna around thirty to forty years, and swordfish about ten to fifteen years. Orange roughy, a deep-water fish, can live beyond one hundred years.
Why Lifespan Matters
Slow-growing, long-lived fish take years to replace their numbers, so they need stronger protection. Choosing sustainably caught seafood helps keep every species thriving.
